What actually changed with R-410A?
R-410A has been one of the dominant refrigerants in residential central air conditioners and heat pumps for years. It is also an HFC refrigerant with a relatively high global warming potential. EPA lists R-410A at a GWP of 2,088, above the 700-GWP limit that applies to many new residential and light-commercial air-conditioning and heat-pump systems under the federal Technology Transitions Program.
That change is part of the broader U.S. HFC phasedown under the American Innovation and Manufacturing Act. This is why manufacturers have been moving toward lower-GWP refrigerants such as R-454B and R-32.
The phrase “R-410A is banned” is too broad. The federal program does not require an existing R-410A air conditioner to be removed simply because it uses R-410A. Existing systems may continue to be used and repaired throughout their useful life.

When should you consider getting a second opinion?
